Single leg stance is extremely important for gait, direction changes and multiplane movements. This includes single leg stance for 30 seconds with a stationary head – single leg stance with head movements in all directions – single leg stance with eyes partially closed – fully closed eyes with stationary head and lastly fully closed eyes with head movements in all directions. These tasks require proprioceptors in the joints (esp the ankles), eyes and ears to work at a greater volume. This is an important neurological structure that loses effectiveness when damaged or aged, in turn creates a feeling of anxiety when walking, changing planes, bending over etc. These exercises should be compulsory for everyone who has ever had an ankle injury and once we feel unsettled when walking.
